Create multiple domains using command line

I would like to create multiple domains around 600+. I know I can create domains using the console/GUI but since I will be making 600+, then this will be a hard task.

I was wondering if there are other options on how to accomplish this.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Serv-U disconnects instead of directory listing

Hello, I am running Serv-U 12.1.0.8 under windows 8.1.  It's been working until recently.  Now users connect and get disconnected.  Typical Serv-U log:

[02] Mon 02Feb15 23:26:03 - (000322) User "Pat" logged in

[03] Mon 02Feb15 23:26:07 - (000322) IP-Name: ip68-5-29-124.oc.oc.cox.net (68.5.29.124)

[02] Mon 02Feb15 23:26:25 - (000322) Closed session

[02] Mon 02Feb15 23:26:25 - (000322) User "Pat" logged out

User's log:

Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...

Status: Initializing TLS...

Error: Connection timed out

Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing

User is set for the proper rights, R-L-I.  There's been no change that I know of on my end.

I know my version is old.  I got it way back when, with lifetime support and updates - until the program was sold and everything stopped, including updates and support.  I was referred here, perhaps someone can help.  Any ideas what to check and how to troubleshoot?

Appreciate any help, even telling me where to post this help request properly - first time on this forum. This forum is listed as an archive - unfortunately I did not find an active Serv-U forum

Cant get SERV-U to (MFT) to connect to Serv-U Gateway (Win 2012R2)

Hello,

I have installed Serv-U MFT on windows server 2012R2 and on a separate server installed the Serv-U Gateway on 2012R2 in the DMZ.

I have confirmed the following:

I can ping both to and from each server.

I see the gateway server is listening on port 1180

I have shut off the windows firewall on both servers (just in case that was blocking)

listeners I have added for the Gaeway have a yellow triangle with a single exclamation point

I have also installed the hotfix, now the systray icon flashes green/yellow

What am I missing?

thank you for any advise.

Newbie Setting up Serv-U MFT & Gateway - Getting Confused

$

Hi,

I'm new to this software, or should I say I've inhereted a very old version (6.4) and have just purchased the new MFT & Gateway solution to replace it.

I'm ok with all the firewall stuff and getting traffic in/out via the Gateway but the Serv-U Back-End Server Setup is really confusing me

It's the setting up of the "Domain" inside the Serv-U Interface, I just don't understand what it's trying to do .

Do I need multiple domains? Do I need FTP & File Sharing? Or one or the other? The Admin user guide doesn't really explain what these choices mean!

What do I call them these "Domains"? Etc. Etc.

Basically this is what I want to do and I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction:-

1) Allow 3rd Parties (Customers & Suppliers) to put and get files from our Serv-U server via the Serv-U Gateway based upon credentials we setup.

2) Allow our company's internal Domain users to put and get files from the Serv-U file server structure based upon Active Directory Group or User Membership.

3) Keep everything safe and seperated

Would I setup a Domain for each 3rd Party?

Any Help appreciated,

Thanks,

Craig

How can I find who deleted an account in Serv-U?

We recently had 3 accounts go missing in one of our Serv-U solutions.  I've looked at the logs, but there isn't any account deletion markers, just directory creation/deletion markers.  Anyone got any ideas?

Serv-U MFT - A virtual path directory cannot be accessed

$

I have a very strange issue. I just updated to 15.1.2.189 and noticed that I could not access a particular virtual path directory. The directory is visible via the mobile HTML site and any FTP client and I can see its subdirectories but when I try to navigate the subdirectories, I get the following error:

The page at 'https://mysite.com' says: ERROR: The file or directory you're trying to access is not available to you.

I am able to access another virtual path directory which is on the same computer that contains the non-accessible directory. There is no difference in the two virtual path directories other than each one is pointing to a different drive.  Also, the mobile site's background is now black and it sucks!

I re-installed the previous version (15.1.1.108) and now I can once again access that directory.

I'm assuming this is a bug with the latest version. How can we find out what's causing this?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE: I found the solution.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I compared the virtual and physical paths and saw that the directory that I was able to access, had a lowercase "c" for the drive letter in both the physical and virtual path settings. The directory that I had the problem with, had an uppercase "D" for the drive letter in the virtual path and a lowercase "d" for the drive letter in the physical path (or vise versa... can't remember). Since changing them to both lowercase, I can access the directory and subs without error.

Presumably, v15.1.1.108 and prior versions ignore the text case.

Also noticed that one of my events failed. When I updated Serv-U, it changed the login of the Serv-U server service back to the local system account. I had to change it back to an account that has permission to run the BAT file that makes changes to the system when the Serv-u event is fired.

is Serv-U 6.1 compatible with windows 2008

We currently have Serv-u 6.1 running on a windows 2003 server.  We'd like to do an in place upgrade on the OS to 2008 but I'm not sure if 6.1 is compatible.  If we have to upgrade Serv-u up to V 12, can we upgrade right to version 12 from 6 or do we have have to go in steps, to version, 7, 8, etc.

Or should we upgrade to a certain version of Serv-u while running on server 2003, upgrade the OS and then finish the Serv-u upgrade?

this is all i could find but it lacks detail.

Serv-U SDK/API?

$

We have an in-house Knowledge Management solution that we'd like to integrate Serv-U with.

Is it possible to create our own custom forms to submit information such as (File, recipient email address, sender email address, download link expiration date, password, etc) to Serv-U's FileShare module and have Serv-U spit back the download link to us?

Right now, it's sort of a two step process.  Everytime we want to send a file out we have to do it through Serv-U's FileShare management interface, get the download link and send the email out through Serv-U, go back to our KM solution and document everything.  It's be nice if we can automate it from our KM solution.

DMZ Gateway & Multiple Backend Server

Hi,

Is it possible to setup DMZ gateway to serve multiple back-end servers on different networks? How the security is handled? How does the DMZ-GW differentiate which server traffic should go to?

Please let me know as soon as possible. I need to finalize the licenses.

Shereef

Qualys SSL Server test capped at B

We're in the process of an security audit by one of our clients. In testing our Servu-FTP server using the Qualys SSL test we have 2 items that are reducing our rating that are server side settings. I'm wondering of anyone else has come across this and knows a resolution to these two items?

This server accepts the RC4 cipher, which is weak. Grade capped to B

The server does not support Forward Secrecy with the reference browsers

Thanks in advance if anyone has advice how to resolve these two issues.

Share a Directory and Indefinite Shares

Is there currently a way to share an entire directory and it's contents, including sub-directories?

How about creating a share that never expires? I know that I can extend the expiration date up to at least 100 years, but that's a blanket for all shares, and is not ideal.

Files not showing in Subfolders after update to 15.1.2.189

Accounts with home dirs on local disks are no longer showing their files in subfolders after the update to 15.1.2.189. Accounts with home dirs on network shares are ok.

Anybody else seeing this problem? Will open up a case with support now.

Update: I just fired up process monitor and checked the access to the files. The directory contents are being read successfully, so it can't be a permissions issue.

SOLVED:

For some (stupid) reason, drive letters seem to be case sensitive now... If I define the home dir as c:\ftpdata\..., the bug is present, if the home dir is defined as C:\ftpdata\..., the contents are shown correctly as with the previous versions.

Response from Customer Support:

...this is a known issue and you are correct it is a bug in this version.

I will send this case to them as a bug to press for a fix as soon as possible and will update you accordingly.

How can I view mapped drive file-resources from the management console?

$

My FTP Root is effectively stored on another file server that is visible from my Serv-U server via a mapped drive against a remote file share.

When I log into the Management Console only local server drives are visible to the Management Console local admin.

I have tried running the Serv-U service with a domain account, but I still can only see local drives.

I was hoping to use the Serv-U server purely as an application server and store the FTP root and sub folders on another file server.

I have read up about virtual directories etc. but this seems to be the opposite to what I need.

Whenever I try to use a UNC path as a domain, group or user home directory the setup reports that the home directory cannot be accessed by a user.

Is what I'm trying to do possible or does the FTP Root have to be on the local server drives?

Thanks,

Craig

issue with latest version of serv-u

it seems i am not the only person with this issue but for me it is a nightmare.  it seems you are now case sensitive on your software when it comes to Home Directories.  See this thread.  I will be spending the better part of my day resolving this so i am not happy.

New Managed File Transfer Certification (CFTP) - Will You Get It?

$

0

A new Managed File Transfer certification was released last month.  Called the "Certified File Transfer Professional", or "CFTP", the video- and study guide-based training program was developed with experts from seven different MFT vendors (and the entire transmission staff of BNY Mellon), including Serv-U's technical lead from Solarwinds, and is intended to quickly prepare IT staff to manage daily operations of a Serv-U MFT Server, Serv-U FTP Server, automated transfer clients, and other managed file transfer technology.

Topics covered in the CFTP program include:

  • Managed File Transfer Concepts  – Covers proper use of MFT, clients and servers, data at rest and data in motion, encryption, hashing, PKI and IPv4 and IPv6.
  • Basic Protocols  – Covers FTP, FTPS, SFTP and SCP.
  • Advanced Protocols  – Covers HTTP, HTTPS, advanced web-based file transfers, WebDAV, email and NDM (Connect:DIRECT).
  • Applicability Statement Protocols  – Covers AS1, AS2 and AS3.
  • Accelerated File Transfer– Covers UDP-based file acceleration and related techniques.
  • File Synchronization and Sharing– Covers “ad hoc” file transfer and collaboration.
  • “At Rest” Encryption– Covers file encryption including OpenPGP, SMIME and “Zip” encryption.
  • File Transfer Operations  – Covers troubleshooting, SLAs, and automation.

More information, including a short video and excerpts from the free (registration required) study guide is available on the official CFTP web site.

QUESTIONS:

  • Is the CFTP program something that you would be interested in for your own career?
  • Could you see using the CFTP program to onboard new transmissions staff?

Anyone run in to this issue before?

Bug in Serv-U 15.1.2? - Expired Password Change not working

$

Good Morning,

Having upgraded 2 Serv-U servers at the weekend to 15.1.2.189, users can no longer change their password when it expires. A server running 15.0.1 is still fine.

Scenario -

1.    A user has the checkbox "user must change password at next logon" ticked, making their password expire immediately.

2.    User attempts to login

3.    Enters their current and new passwords

4.    The following error is shown..

serv-u1.jpg

A closer inspection using Firebug shows a 401 Unauthorized error..

serv-u2.jpg

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks in advance,

Chris
