File Management Path Statement & Use

Good day,

Quick question about the File Management functionality.

Under File Management (Located in the Directories section), I want to create a "deletion" rule, that deletes files under a number of sub-directories after xx days. Can I use the path statement "/ftp/foo/bar/*"? And If I use this path statement, will this delete only the files with in each sub-directory under ~/bar? Or will this delete all the sub-directories with ~/bar?

Thanks

MORTAL KOMBAT - Windows vs LDAP Authentication - FIGHT!

Issue - My users want to log in using their Active Directory authentication credentials, and I don't know how to deploy this in Serv-U.

Resolution - Configure either Windows Authentication or LDAP Authentication in your Serv-U Domain.

Many Serv-U administrators find themselves asking:

"What is the difference between Windows Authentication and LDAP Authentication in Serv-U? And which one should I configure?"

And we are here to assist with this choice.

Windows vs. LDAP

Both LDAP and Active Directory are used to allow users to connect to Serv-U by using Active Directory credentials. LDAP additionally allows for authentication against other LDAP servers like Apache Directory Server and OpenLDAP.

The main difference between LDAP Groups and Windows Groups in Serv-U is the following:

    • Windows Groups utilize NTFS permissions, but configuration is at the Organizational Unit only, with no hook into Security Groups.
    • LDAP Groups do not leverage NTFS permissions (so Serv-U is in control of file and folder permissions) but you can use Security Groups to apply permissions and settings (though settings are not inherited by nested groups).

Even though the LDAP configuration can be slightly more difficult to set up, if an admin asks for a recommendation on which to use we would prefer LDAP due to ease of use once it is configured correctly.

After you make the choice, configure Windows or LDAP authentication

Testing

The following images show what a successful HTTP login looks like for the user and the Serv-U admin. Note that LDAP and Windows Authentication looks identical in the logs.

The log entries for the admin for a successful login and logout can be viewed under Serv-U admin console > Domain Activity > Log.

Being able to read and understand the log is useful for not only this issue, but for many other issues in Serv-U. If an error occurs Serv-U will most likely have the error in its log. If you see no such errors then Serv-U did not capture the issue in the connection, and with LDAP and AD authentication, we urge you to review the directory machine's log.

Please keep Serv-U up to date

Finally we urge any administrator working with LDAP or Windows authentication to make sure their Serv-U installation is up to date.
To ensure the best experience, we advise that you upgrade to the latest version of Serv-U BEFORE configuring your advanced user authentication. If you need more information about what has been fixed or what the latest version of Serv-U is, please visit our release notes page:

Can I migrate my Windows 2003 Serv-U instance to an Ubuntu Server VM?

My hardware is aging and I don't really have a budget.  I can stand up and instance of Ubuntu Server on a virtual server.

I would then like to migrate my Windows 2003 Serv-U instance and migrate it to that Ubuntu Server.

I'd have some challenges left, like automated copying of files from windows machines to the correct folder

for my clients to log in and download, things like that - but I don't see that as a huge problem.

Thanks in advance!
Bryan

FTP Voyager Users

I have FTP Voyager installed on a machine and if I'm logged on or it is signed off it will work, but if another user is signed on it doesn't seem to work. Is FTP Voyager shared through all users are only limited to the user that installed the software under their logon?

Thanks...

Is there a way to programmatically add IP addresses to the blocked IP address list?

$

I'd like to write a program that responds to a failed-logon event and if
the username is in a honeypot list of usernames programmatically add that IP to the blocked list.

I see that the IPs in the list are stored in serv-u.archive, is it as simple as appending the block of lines associated
with those entries to the serv-u.archive file?

Thank you!

How to access FTP Voyager Scheduler across the network?

$

Hi all

I was wondering if there is a way of making the FTP Voyager Scheduler console available from other computers on the network.

When I launch the scheduler it opens the website: http://127.0.0.1:52986/, this works perfectly on the local machine but if I edit the address to:

http://server:52986/ and try it on a domain machine it fails to load.  (I've confirmed that there are no firewall rules in the way).

Any ideas?

Thanks

Luke

Multiple Active Directory problem in Serv-U MFT

$

Hi, I've defined 2 Active Directory domains in Serv-U Management console. Both are enabled. But when I try to login from Serv-U Web client my username and password are always checked in one of the domains. It does not check both of them if the username couldn't be found in the first AD domain.

I really wonder how Serv-U MFT authentication works when there are multiple AD domains defined in the management console.

Thanks.

is there a way to limit rights in group administrator?

some of my staff need the ability to create users for our customers. But as a group administrator (that's what I've created for my staff), I need to be able to disable some options, such as the ability to delete home folders on the server, ex - c:\log or c:\home for all of the users.

Is there a way to do this?

I'm running this on a windows server 2012 OS. I know I could setup permissions on the OS level, but these users in serv-u don't exist on the server OS itself.

In Place Upgrade of Serv-U FTP from 10.3.0.1 to latest version?

$

We are currently running Serv-U FTP version 10.3.0.1 on our web server. Following some penetration testing we have become aware that this version has some security vulnerabilities and would therefore like to upgrade to the latest version.

  • Can anyone advise if an "in place upgrade" is possible or is a patch available?
  • Would a new licence need to be purchased or can we carry across our current licence? What would the cost of a new licence be if required?
  • Can all settings/user accounts be carried across?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Unable to "Share" files other than txt or pdf on Serv-U MFT

I'm looking for a little guidance....

I have an MFT server installed to allow AD authenticated access to user folders and shared space with HTTPS and FTPS. WORKS GREAT!

I'm running into an issue when trying to use the SHARE functionality.

When I ready to SEND a file to a person via e-mail, I am presented with an error that the "file or directory can not be accessed" when uploading an EXE, ZIP, XML files.

However, This DOESN'T happen with PDF or TXT extension files.

Is there a configuration setting that allows an administrator to enable/disable what file extensions are able to be posted to the MFT when using the Share Files function.

Note: There are NO issues when uploading to the same files space when using FTPS or HTTPS. I do not see the A/V on the server dropping anything.

Thanks for your input.

Serv-U and CVE-2015-0235?

Serv-U MFT (on linux) not listening on port 22

$

Hi,

We are using Serv-U MFT 15.1.1.108 running on Red Hat 6.6.

We have created a domain and added listener for IPv4 on port 22, but it shows the little warning icon and server log states that port is already in use:

[01] Wed 04Feb15 15:01:55 - SFTP (SSH) SERVER IS NOT LISTENING ON IP 0.0.0.0 (127.0.0.1, 10.50.85.72): Port number 22 is already in use

We tried killing the SSH daemon on the OS but it does not help. netstat shows no port bound on the system.

Then we tried adding same port 22 listener for IPv6 and it successfully binds to port 22 (but same does not work for IPv4).

Also tried setting up trial version on CentOS virtual image and same problem occurs.

It is a licensed version (therefore should not be an issue of limited functionality).
