Hello everyone,
I'm pretty new to this and by no means experienced with network admin so I apologize if this question is a little basic. I want to setup a personal ftp site and be able to access it via a web browser from anywhere. The reason is that I want to easily share photos with people I went on vacation with and not everyone has facebook/dropbox/etc. So my first question is, will Serv-U accomplish this? If not, that's fine I'd be happy to see if people have some better suggestions. If it will, I have a few more questions. Here's what I've done so far:
- Dowloaded and installed Serv-U, setup a domain and dedicated a drive to it, setup a username and password for people to use, setup an HTTP Listener with a specified IPv4 address and port (not totally sure what this means but I'm assuming that's a router port than forwards to the local IP address for my FTP server)
- I pointed a sub domain of a domain I own to my routers IP address. I'm not sure if I used the right IP though. I did the whole cmd->ipconfig and used the IPv4 address that came up.
- I forwarded a port on my router to my FTPs IP because I feel like that needs to happen (the domain is pointing to my router which then has to point to my ftp on my local network is my logic). Even if this is correct, I have to be missing a step because the router would have to know which traffic to forward there. Also, I'm also more than open to the possibility that my logic is wrong because I don't really know what I'm doing.
Ultimately I want people to be able to type in the domain I give them and have them see this screen where they login and then access the drive I've dedicated to the ftp:
